"Serge LeClerc's message . is moving and inspiring. His is the
story of a man who has survived mistreatment, imprisonment,
unimaginable abuse and was able to rise from the clutches of
poverty, criminality, and despair to become a man respected in all
walks of life . it inspires individuals to make the choices needed
to come back from the darkness of personal tragedy and pain." ~
Chuck Colson, Founder, Prison Fellowship
A product of rape, Serge LeClerc was first arrested at the age of
eight and sentenced to Canada's most violent and brutal reform
school. By age 12, labeled "irreparably brain damaged", he ran away
from a group home to begin a life of crime. By his 20's Serge was a
veteran criminal. Two decades later he was a co-leader of one of
Canada's most powerful drug crime families. His life was consumed by
rage, violence, addiction and greed.
Serge's arrest in 1984, for a $40 million meth lab, would be the
last of many prison sentences and the beginning of a journey that
would ultimately 'untwist' the years of dysfunction. While he was in
solitary confinement and questioning his own life, a Prison
Fellowship Canada volunteer told Serge he had a choice. He could
believe that he was an animal that walked on two legs, with no
purpose, or that he was a creation, there was a Creator, he had a
soul and was of great value, and that he had a purpose in life. As
much as his past choices had lead him into a life of pain and waste,
his choices from here on in could bring him to a life of hope and
transformation. The choices Serge made from that point on put him on
a path that has led to exactly that!
With virtually no formal education, he completed a university
degree while still in prison. After his release, he graduated with
honors in sociology and social work from the University of Waterloo.
Since 1989, Serge has used his unique combination of life experience
and education to make a difference in the lives of others. His work
as a motivational speaker and consultant has been lauded across
Canada and in the United States.
In 2000, Serge became the only crime figure in Canadian history
to be granted a full national pardon through an act of Parliament.
Police Chiefs, Crime Stoppers Presidents, and RCMP Inspectors
campaigned for him, citing his work with Crime Stoppers
International and their personal belief that he was fully a changed
man.
With the publication of Untwisted in 2007, Serge added best
selling Canadian author to his accomplishments. His election as a
Member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan that same year
was another personal milestone and is the only time in Canada's
history that a previously-convicted criminal has been elected to a
senior level of government.
Today, Serge divides his time between his legislative
responsibilities, his work in the community and speaking engagements
throughout Canada and the US. The third, up-to-date edition of
Untwisted has just been released. A feature film, as well as a
documentary based on his life, is in development.
