 Laurie Dexter
Adventure, Motivation, Fitness, Arctic & Antarctic Nature & History, Inuit (Eskimo) Themes

L
aurie was a member of the joint Soviet-Canadian Polar Bridge Expedition that skied from Russia to Canada through the North Pole in 1988. The team took 91 days to cross the ever-shifting ice of the polar ocean, with backpacks in excess of 100 pounds and temperatures frequently in the minus 40s.

As a young man Laurie emigrated from Scotland to Canada. He has lived nearly all his working life in the Northwest Territories, including thirteen years in the most northerly communities in the world. There he learned the survival skills and language of the Inuit (Eskimos). He has made numerous first ascents of rock routes and mountains, and has taken part in a variety of demanding expeditions, kayaking, skiing, sled hauling and mountaineering, most of them in the High Arctic. He has also worked for five seasons as a guide and lecturer with ship based tourism in Antarctica, and made a ski and sled-hauling traverse of King George Island in Antarctica.

He is an experienced runner, having completed over 60 marathons such as Boston, Atlantic City, New York, Toronto, Vancouver, and Antarctica. However, Laurie specializes in ultra-running. He has run the Nanisivik Midnight Sun double marathon 14 times, 203 km in the Canadian 24 hour Championships, 10 marathons in 10 days in Czechoslovakia, the 87 km Comrades race in South Africa, the World 100 km Championships in Belgium, and over 600 km in 6 days in New York.

In recognition of his contribution, Laurie has received many honours, including the Order of Canada, the Soviet Order of Friendship of Nations, The UNESCO Fair Play Trophy, and the Outward Bound Kurt Hahn Award.

Laurie is a speaker who brings the excitement of first-hand experience to his presentations, using a dynamic, humorous, but also serious and thought-provoking approach. His diverse topics include Arctic and Antarctic history, geography, and nature, along with anthropology, linguistics, fitness, cross-cultural education, and motivational lectures based on his expeditions and running. At present he is planning a ski crossing of Antarctica in 1999/2000.
