Have We
Lost our Sense of Adventure?
As a nation we are becoming more and more risk averse.
We are mommy-coddled by a nanny state that surrounds us with support.
We have an increasing blame and claim culture. We are unnerved by
September 11th and the threats of global terrorism and we are becoming
a nation where we are increasingly dependent upon others to live our
lives.
Chris Fox, President of the
Association of Chief Police Officers said recently “People have been
weaned away from risk. It’s because we have 24 hour shops, 24 hour
fuel and 24 hour cash. Everything you can pop out and get. People have
got comfortable. Thirty years ago people were prepared to last a little
bit longer before they needed things.”
Great Britain was made great by
generations of adventurers, who were able to take on bold ambitious
challenges in the hope of positive outcomes and face and deal with risk
and uncertainty. What is more adventures offer excitement, which is all
too often missing in the lives of ordinary people?
Rediscover
the spirit of adventure...
To be blunt, we have had the adventure knocked out of us. What we need
is more adventure and more adventurers. We need to rediscover the
“Spirit of Adventure”.
Not only will it bring us greater achievements, but also a sense of
pride and fulfillment.
Definition
of Adventure...
My definition of adventure is “An undertaking that involves
risk and uncertainty in the hope of positive outcomes with the
expectation of excitement.” When one thinks of adventure, first
thoughts may go to climbing mountains, sailing oceans or perhaps walking
across polar ice caps, yet an adventure is actually any undertaking that
involves risk and uncertainty in the hope of positive outcomes. Our own
lives are adventures as are businesses. In a way, we are all therefore
adventurers, we just don’t see that.
Set
Bold Ambitious Challenges...
Most businesses and individuals would benefit from setting
themselves bold ambitious challenges, moving outside their comfort zones
and having the courage to “have a go”, understanding that there are
risk and uncertainties.
Not everything will succeed, but
failure provides the opportunities to learn and develop and embark on
new adventures that may well succeed. The old adage “Nothing ventured,
nothing gained” can hardly be truer.
Understanding
Adventure is a relative concept...
The important thing to understand is that being an adventurer is a
relative concept. It doesn’t mean you need to climb a mountain or sail
an ocean. It is all about setting yourself an objective that is a
challenge to you and offers you the positive outcomes you desire. This
might mean setting about getting promoted at work, developing personally
so you feel you can achieve more or perhaps changing jobs, setting up
your own business or making the that you work for more successful. In
simple terms adventure is about dreaming what could be, defining your
goals whatever they might be and having the courage to do something
about achieving them.
Making
the most of our time on Earth...
Drift is one of the biggest malaises of our age. We don’t think enough
about who we are and what we really want. We waste our greatest asset;
time and only seem to wake up when we have a shock; we are seriously
ill, someone close to us dies, we have a significant birthday that makes
us feel old (mid life crisis) etc. Often by the time we realise what has
happened we have lost the moment. Life is not a rehearsal; I believe we
have the right to feel alive, to experience excitement and fun, to be
everything that we want to be and to do everything that we want to do.
That right does not come from other people giving to you, but that right
comes from your own ability to take control of you’re your own life
and become accountable to yourself.
Unlocking
human potential and achieving dreams...
Everyone needs help to unlock their potential and achieve their dreams.
“The Three Adventurers” a trio of adventurers in life and business
are offering to do just that with inspirational, motivational,
educational and entertaining seminars, backed up with longer term
support.
Delivering
Outstanding Business Achievements in The Future...
The past is history and can’t be changed. Previous or current business
success offers no guarantees for the future. The likelihood is that if
you carry on doing the same things you will get the same results or
worse. In the fiercely competitive business world, complacency is one of
the biggest threats. Business leaders need to be looking to the future,
exploring what is beyond the horizon, out of sight of others and
grasping opportunities and defending against threats, often before
others are even remotely aware of them. The vision you create for your
businesses future is the start of your business adventure. |
