Greg Clarks’s Expertise – Practical strategies and tools for the new era for cities and regions.

The industrial society of the past two centuries required cities and regions in the developed world to deliver specific roles, and it gave them their character and functions, shaping their land uses, transportation systems, housing stock, amenities and settlement patterns.

The current global knowledge based era asks for something different. It needs cities and regions to respond in new ways. They have to respond to increased mobility, and the different demands of families, mobile firms, investors, workers, visitors and residents, who expect excellent services, access to opportunities and improved environments. They have to innovate and change to survive and flourish, set their own direction, and garner support from national governments and from partners in business and in civic life. To achieve this requires new strategies and plans and new tools and agencies. Moreover, fundamentally, it requires fresh leadership.

Drawing on his 20 years direct experience Greg Clark helps cities and regions to; generate new leadership, build new city-regional strategies and collaborations with business and civic society, generate financial innovation and investment, create new agencies and invest in powerful place branding and marketing. He speaks at conferences and seminars on city and regional themes where he says that to succeed in the current era, cities and regions have to provide:

  • Connections to the world economy giving access to; jobs, markets for products and services, global knowledge and expertise, visitors, new populations, and mobile events.

  • Quality of life that provides good housing choices for people and families. Amenities and excellent services for resident populations and those who visit.

  • Opportunities for people to acquire new skills, knowledge and abilities, and to access meaningful employment.

  • Leadership that communicates the future path for the city or region and accurately understands its assets, endowment, and opportunities, taking bold decisions and implementing strategies fully.

  • Innovation in institutions that can produce new policies, services, and tools, and can communicate well with multiple stakeholders and audiences.

  • Collaboration between different parties and organizations including neighboring areas, higher spheres of government and business and civic society.
